Sydney Thunder played its 1st match against Melbourne Stars in 2011 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, and defeated the home team in their 1st encounter. The performance of the team was quite disappointing. In the first 4 seasons this team ceased to fascinate its fans and finished at last spot in initial three seasons i.e. (2011-2012 | 2012-2013 | & 2013-2014) and finished at the second-last position in the season 2014-2015.

It is said that “Fortune Favours the Brave”. Despite of the such a huge disappointment, low morale and angry cricketing fans, the Thunders didn’t let their hopes down. The owners believed their players and worked hard and thought of experimenting different things in order to bring improvement to the team.

Therefore, it was time to lift the squad to a higher level therefore change was mandatory. In this regard the following superstars were added to the team in the season 2015-2016 of Big Bash League.

The Team played exactly up to the expectations of the fans, the team took a flying start of the season by winning their first three matches and now it seemed clear to the fans that Thunder are amongst choices to win this tournament but unfortunately, they couldn’t keep the expectations and lost their next 4 matches. But the season hasn’t ended here. There was still the last group match to be played and it was to be played with Sixers. It was the 2nd time when Thunders defeated Sixers. This was history in the making as it happened only two times in the history.

This was the best season of Sydney Thunders as they have qualified for the Final in this season by beating Adelaide Strikers. The FINAL didn’t brought any fortune for the Thunders where they were beaten by the hands of Melbourne Stars. This season has brought new fame to the Thunders as apart from Runner-up they were announced as the Most Watched Team of the Season.

Another important factor that makes Sydney Thunders special is the effort in the contribution to the society. To serve the purpose, the management has taken two initiatives. The first one is MoneyGram Thunder National Cup & Thunder Bus.

The MoneyGram Thunder National Cup provide opportunity to the people of different cultures to bring their teams and take part in the competition. These cultural teams represent their own communities. The tournament is played between 7 teams of diverse ethnic backgrounds. The Final of MoneyGram Thunder National Cup is played before the Sydney Thunders Match in a jam-packed ground.

Likewise, they have started a bus service that is called as Thunder Bus. Basically, the Bus of Sydney Thunders collects players from the schools and different cricketing clubs of not only Sydney but also from Local New South Wales Communities to increase their engagement to the club by playing quiz games etc. The age limit set for this is between 5-12 years. The engagement has got spread that it has achieved the milestone of hundred thousand people.

Looking forward to see the Thunders in action in the 2017-2018 edition of KFC Big Bash League.
